Classic Rib vs Standing Seam
So, what's the difference?
Installation - The classic rib installation uses an exposed screw and requires precision installation of the screws so that none are too tight causing the rubber gasket to have a shorter life span or too loose both of which can be potential leak points. The standing seam system uses an clip that screws directly into the substrate. The screws are hidden by the next panel creating a continuous seam down the roof. No screws penetrate the panel creating a tighter weatherproof bond. Price - Here is the rub... Typical cost for Classic rib is 5 to $8.00 a square foot where standing seam can be anywhere from 8 to $14.00 a square foot. It takes more panels and clip, screw, etc. material to attach a standing seam which all means - you guessed it, more labor... Warranty - Standing seam is considered a lifetime roof system lasting 40 - 60 years. For those have have already purchased multiple roofs, this longevity may be appealing. For the classic rib, there are many types of paint finishes available in the market and that will determine your material warranty. The reality of exposed screws means maintenance is required. Properly maintained with screws replaced every 5 to 10 years, you should get 20 to 30 years from this style roof. |
Durability - Wind resistance on metal vs shingle gives metal a clear advantage. Standing seam uses a thicker gage steel so hail durability and general damage from tree limbs and such goes to the thicker metal.
Installation Method - When it comes to valleys and protrusions, the installation is going to be smoother for a classic rib. There's also way less trim required cutting down on time and as the saying goes...time is money! In summary, classic rib is hands down more economical in the immediate term. If overall price were applied across lifetime, things get a bit more similar. Bottom line, even though costs may be double for a standing seam, the value across the life of the roof, reduced maintenance, and pure aesthetic look will make the difference worth it for some. |
Architectural vs 3 Tab Shingles
So, what's the difference? You've seen the older 3 tab style shingle at the big box stores really cheap. What really is the difference and why would you want to pay more for the new shiny style?
We're going to break it down into a few categories to help with the understanding. In order to simplify, we'll leave out all the pipe boots, vents, labor, and extra items needed to complete every job and just focus on the shingles. If the average house takes around 40 squares of shingles to complete and three bundles to make a square, we can determine material cost for our first category. Price - 3 tab around 2800.00 vs architectural at around 3400.00. That's not as big a difference as you might have expected but let's look further at why you would want to pay a little more per shingle. Warranty - 3 tab 15 to 20 years vs architectural 20 to 30 years Everyone hears terms like 30 year or 50 year roofs when doing your research. Does that mean you get a new roof for free at year 49 if there is a problem? Of course not! It means in the most ideal conditions with no other building factors or adverse weather conditions the shingle is rated for that maximum life span but many factors will play into the true performance of both style shingles and warranties have a declining value over the term in years. Call us now with any roofing service questions. |
Durability - Hail and storm damage, snow in certain parts of the country, freeze/thaw, and in our neck of the woods, tropical storm/hurricane winds all make our roofs take a beating. With wind ratings only going to around 50 to 90 mph on a 3 tab to 110 to 130mph on architectural, the durability alone is worth the added expense.
Installation Method - Though very similar, architectural shingles are a little more forgiving than the rigid requirements of getting a 3 tab perfect row by row. This makes for a happy installation crew and likely speeds up the process a little. Many of our manufacturers offer certification programs that allow us to stand behind their products with a better knowledge of how we can also warranty our installation so depending on the product selected, there may be additional incentive on the labor side as well. Just ask your estimator when selecting a product to see if it qualifies for one of these programs. In summary, for the minor difference in price, the bang for the buck far exceeds the risk for reduced longevity on a 3 tab vs architectural shingles.
